Superfood Spotlight: Chia Seed!

Chia Seeds are a spotlight-worthy superfood! We really can’t get enough of them and all the healthful benefits they provide. They’ve come a long way from once being thought of as a seed-mixture that sprouted (comically) on various terracotta figurines “ch-ch-ch-chia!”...if you’re not familiar with that little reference Google the term “Chia Pet” and you’ll see what we’re talking about. This was only a minor detour in their history where they’ve been long-valued and utilized for their nutritional and medicinal properties. Chia seeds have been grown, consumed, and even used as currency in Mexico (and South America) throughout Mayan and Aztec history. Chia means “strength” in the Mayan language, and these precious seeds were historically used as fuel to help warriors with everything from endurance to providing long-lasting energy(1). Today, chia seeds have been shown to provide even more health benefits than previously recognized, making them a worthy representative in the superfood category. They’re high in fiber, protein, and calcium; contain essential fatty acids, vitamins A, B, E, and D, are rich in antioxidants, and provide several important minerals including iron, magnesium, manganese, sulfur, iodine, and thiamin.

Some of the Standout Benefits of Chia Seeds

Brain Food We touched base on this in our blog “Hey Smarty Pants We’ve Got a Brand New Brain Food.” Definitely worth a read but long in the short of it chia seeds provide a substantial dose of the essential fatty acid (EFA) omega-3 (we’re talking 3 grams per serving!), which is highly beneficial for cognitive function.

Good for the Digestive System Chia seeds are extremely fiber-rich, which is essential for gut health and even balancing insulin levels. When chia seeds are mixed with liquid they form a gel that is easily digestible and highly beneficial to your gut...as it can perform as a prebiotic, supporting probiotic growth in your digestive tract.

Healthy, Glowing Skin Free radical damage and inflammation are the primary causes of aging skin. Chia seeds are extremely high in antioxidants giving them the remarkable ability to repair and prevent free radical damage and fight the skins inflammatory responses -- this is fantastic news for your skin!

Heart Health Support In addition to anti-inflammatory benefits, chia seeds have been recognized for their ability to lower blood pressure, regulate cholesterol, and reverse oxidative stress. This is due to the high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids they provide, which have the capability to protect your heart by reducing cholesterol, blood pressure, and overall inflammation(1).

The Versatility and Dietary Usage of Chia Seeds

Raw chia seeds can be consumed whole or ground-up in powder form. They have a very mild nutty flavor that pairs well with sweet or savory foods. They’re often substituted for eggs in baking recipes, making them an ideal alternative for vegans and those who suffer from an egg allergy.

As mentioned above, when they’re introduced to a liquid such as your favorite alternative milk or juice, they create their signature prebiotic gel. This gel is the perfect base for your favorite pudding, jam (great substitute for pectin!), and porridge recipes. You can also add them to smoothies or sprinkle them on your favorite salad.
